Ice Castles will be held in Lynchburg, VA on January 25, 2025.

Ice Castles is the Barony of Black Diamond’s baronial birthday event held at the end of January.

Come thank Baron Alonzo and Baroness Alys for their years of service to the Barony as they step down and celebrate the investiture of our new Baronage.

Description:

Persephone wishes to be freed of her imprisonment in Tartarus and her possessive husband Hades. Most of all, she wishes to see her mother Demeter again and welcome in the coming of spring and harvests. Will you be hearty enough to survive our 3 man team rescue challenges? Will you bring forth art that welcomes the return of spring and all its glory? Can you use your science skills to cultivate crops for food that can withstand the harsh temperatures? Can your populace create clothing to keep them warm during frigid and unforgiving winters?

We welcome you to Ice Castles 2025/Barony of Black Diamond Investiture as we celebrate the reign of Alys and Alonzo of Black Diamond and transition into new leadership like the passing of the seasons. Glory awaits you on the field of battle and our artisans will surely wish to impress as well! Please join us in Lynchburg, Virginia as we bring radiance and warmth upon our mountainy expanse and be prepared for a Roman feast that will surely delight!

A&S:

(These items will be judged and located in the small classroom attached to the main hall in the building.)

“Brave The Winter Challenge” utilize your sewing and weaving skills to create a beautiful winter-themed shall, cloak, or cape, gloves, mittens to withstand the harsh elements. In this challenge extra points will be added for use of Kingdom colors (White/Blue) within your pieces.

“Only the Hearty Survive” create a winter-themed dish (vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free recipes allowed) that will fortify Their Excellencies troops as they march into the wilderness and protect our lands from our enemies. In this challenge taste and use of Baronial colors will be the deciding factor. Hot and spicy or chilled and icy, come show the kingdom your culinary skills this winter.

“Cold as Ice” create an original piece of jewelry, belt-buckle, or other leather or metal piece of art that contains the color blue in some form to celebrate the beauty of winter. With this challenge we would like to put emphasis on the documentation for the “Blue” you chose.

“Bakers’ Dozen” competition. Everyone enters 13 items of largesse (awards cords, scroll blanks, belt favors, etc.) The populace will use a bean count voting method. The winner gets 1 item from each entry and the other 12 will go to new Baronage. Please attach names (both SCA & Mundane) and contact info to each item.

Feast:

Prepared by Patronne Murienne L’aloiere this Roman-themed feast will be one for all to enjoy!

Feast Sign Up is by online reservations ONLY! However, if there are feast slots open on event day, then those will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

“This feast is based on recipes in Athenaeus’ Deipnosophists and Apicius’ De Re Coquinaria. These two famous works serve as a window into the dining habits of both ancient Rome and Greece.
While I normally try to ensure that my kitchen is nut-free for SCA feasts, that is all but impossible when preparing foods from these cultures. That being said, I am limiting the nuts in the feast to almonds and walnuts, and the dishes containing them will be prepared in a separate area using equipment brought for this purpose to avoid cross-contamination as much as possible.”
